Three unidentified men on Tuesday allegedly opened fire at a police party in Haryana’s Karnal and freed a dacoity convict from their custody. Two police personnel sustained bullet injuries, the police said.

The incident occurred at the Karnal new bus stand when the police personnel were on their way to Yamunanagar after producing Sunil (23), alias Kheera, at a local court in a murder case of 2016. Sunil, of Bahadad in Panipat, is a convict in a dacoity case and undergoing trial in five other cases, including murder.

The three men fired at Sub-Inspector Surinder Singh and Constable Sandeep while they were waiting to board a bus. The assailants also used pepper spray to attack another policeman, Vinod, and freed Sunil.

Haryana DGP Manoj Yadav has announced a reward of ₹1 lakh for any information on Sunil and the others.

The Congress took a dig at the BJP government in the State. “The law and order situation has deteriorated even as the BJP government led by Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khatar is in deep slumber,” party spokesperson Randeep Singh Surjewala said in a tweet.
