The sudden rain that lashed Salem city and other parts of the district on late Sunday evening has brought much respite to the people suffering from sweltering heat for the last many weeks.

Various parts of the city were inundated in the rain.

Trees in Ramakrishna Mutt Road, Gorimedu, some other places got uprooted affecting the movement of vehicles.

With many roads and streets leading to residential localities dug for the execution of the underground drainage works not properly closed, vehicle users had a tough time negotiating through the flooded roads in pitch darkness.

All the drainages in Peramanur, Johnsonpettai, Manakkadu, Rajaganapathi nagar, Alamarathukkadu, Kalarampatti overflowed.

The hill station of Yercaud too experienced sharp showers.

Branches of trees fell on the Salem – Yercaud ghat road affecting the traffic totally for some time.

Some of the branches fell on power transmission lines disrupting power supply.

The rural towns of Vazhappadi, Attur, Gangavalli, Ilampillai, Veerapandi, Attayampatti, Sankagiri, Edappadi, Mettur too experienced sharp showers.

Trees in Panamarathupatti, Attaiyampatti, Sitherikkadu, got uprooted affecting traffic and power supply.

Many tanks where cleaning works are in progress under the kudi maramathu thittam launched by the State Government recently received heavy inflow of water.

Yercaud experienced the maximum rainfall of 39 mm in the last 24 hours that ended at 8 a.m. on Monday, followed by Salem city 33.7; Kdaiyampatti 23; Attur 22.4; Omalur 21.4; Mettur 19.6; Thammampatti 19.4; Aanaimaduvu 15; P. N. Palayam 7; Kariyakovil 6; Veeraganur 5; Gangavalli 4.2; Sankagiri 3.1; Edappadi 1.4; and Vazhappadi 1 mm.
