The police on Tuesday arrested a 21-year-old man on charges of murdering a woman and grievously injuring her children in Ambattur.

The suspect, Vigneswaran alias Vikki, was apprehended at CMBT when he was trying to flee to his native place in Ramanathapuram district.

A senior police officer said Vikki was working at a tea stall, owned by one Michaelraj, in Venkatapuram, Ambattur. He had demanded cash for Pongal from Michaelraj, but was refused. He then went to Michaelraj’s house and demanded money from his wife, Arockiavanitha, who also turned him down. Angered, Vikki stabbed Arockiavanitha and her two children, and fled with five sovereigns of jewellery and Rs. 45,000 in cash.

Following a complaint from Michaelraj, the Ambattur police arrested the accused.
