Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury did not comment on possible pre-poll alliances in Tamil Nadu, but said that his party’s decision would be guided by the recent decision of its Central Committee (CC).
On Friday, Mr. Yechury told reporters that the CC had resolved to prepare for the upcoming general elections with three objectives: “To defeat the BJP and its allies, to strengthen the CPI (M) and the Left in the Parliament and Assemblies, and to work for an alternative secular government at the Centre,” he said.
“The objective will be to maximise the pooling of anti-BJP votes so that the BJP will not benefit out of the division in the opposition vote like last time,” he added.
Mr. Yechury said that a national alliance would emerge based on various agreements made at the State-level.
“We are talking first with our Left partners and then the secular, opposition regional parties. On that basis, we will take the process forward. As the election approaches, the actual dynamics will be announced,” Mr. Yechury added.
