Work to construct the 2.3-km-long flyover at Medavakkam has resumed after eight months of stoppage. The construction was put on hold in May 2018 by the contractor who could not complete the ₹300-crore project, which includes land acquisition, due to financial constraints. The work began in February 2016.
Fresh contract
Sources in the Highways Department said the first contract was terminated. Fresh tenders were called and problems had been sorted out, they added.
Just last week, a new contractor began work to finish the remaining 65% of the flyover.
The section of the flyover that will carry traffic from Tambaram to Velachery will cross the Sholinganallur-Medavakkam, Medavakkam-Mambakkam and Mount Medavakkam junctions on the Velachery-Tambaram Road and will be 2.3-km long. The other section, that will allow motorists through from the other direction, will be 1.5-km in length.
The cost of construction is ₹146 crore. The contractor has been given 21 months to finish work on the flyover, which would be longest in the city on completion, the source explained. Land acquisition is at an advanced stage.
