The Highways Department was forced to halt work on a bridge across the Adyar river near Tambaram following objections by the Ministry of Defence that a portion of land reportedly belonging to it was being used for the project.

The Rural Roads Wing of the Highways Department is constructing an elevated bridge across the Adyar connecting Anakaputhur Municipality and Tharapakkam village panchayat. Work began in 2009 and more than 50 per cent of the work was completed, according to officials. On Thursday morning, a team of personnel from the Indian Air Force Station in Tambaram came to the spot and asked the staff to halt the work. The contractors and staff were surprised and called up senior officials of the Highways Department, who reached the spot. Highways officials said work began only after resolutions were passed by the councils of Anakaputhur Municipality and Tharapakkam village panchayat.Highways officials said the issue would be taken up on Friday and a complete survey of the site done by the Revenue Department.
