Woman sleeping on pavement run over, three others injured

An autorickshaw ran over the residents on Walltax Road; police have detained the driver

A 46-year-old woman, who was sleeping on the platform on Walltax Road, was run over by an autorickshaw. Three others, a woman and two children, who were also sleeping on the platform were injured, in the early hours on Tuesday.

Police said that at 3.30 a.m., the autorickshaw driver, Kaliappan, 60, of Tondiarpet picked up a customer from Chennai Central Railway Station and was proceeding towards Moolakothalam to drop the passenger. While he was on the way, a dog suddenly crossed the road near Blue Star hotel. This resulted in Kaliappan losing control of his vehicle and the autorickshaw ran over the platform on which R. Anjali and three others were sleeping.

Anjali died on the spot, while the three others E. Chitra, 28, and her children Baran, 13, and Bhavani, 11, were injured. The injured were rushed to the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital.

Elephant Gate Police have detained Kaliappan. Further investigations are on.
