The Selaiyur police on Monday evening arrested a 22-year-old youth and his accomplice on charges of kidnapping a 24-year-old woman at Sembakkam near Tambaram.

Briefing reporters on Tuesday, policemen said K.Apparao (54) of Sembakkam lodged a complaint on Monday evening that his daughter, Anusuya, had been kidnapped. The kidnappers had demanded a ransom of Rs.40 lakh. He was asked to hand over the cash at an isolated spot late in the night.

Police claimed that they apprehended the kidnappers, who told them that they had kept the woman at a house in Mahalakshmi Nagar. She was subsequently rescued and restored with her parents.

Apparao had taken a sum of Rs.34.5 lakh in cash with him, which was recovered. The youth, K.Vinod Kumar, and his accomplice Kanagavel had reportedly kidnapped the woman in an autorickshaw. The police were searching for the vehicle.

The woman and Kumar studied at a private university in Selaiyur and knew each other.

Further investigations are on, police said.
