Woman kills visually impaired son at home, attempts suicide

Says she took the step as she could not take care of him

A woman, who murdered her 13-year-old visually impaired son, has been arrested by the police.

According to the police, Padma Gopinath was living with her mother and son at St. Thomas Mount after separating from her husband. Her mother had died recently.

On Friday night, Padma brought her son, Bharath, in an unconscious state to a nearby hospital and claimed that he had attempted suicide by wrapping his face in a plastic bag. Doctors declared him brought dead and sent the body to the Government General Hospital, Chromepet.

The post-mortem revealed that Bharath had been suffocated to death. When confronted, Padma admitted to having killed her son as she was unable to take care of him.

The police said that Padma first covered Bharath’s face in a plastic bag, suffocating him, and then tried to hang herself. “As the rope came off, she tried to kill herself by wrapping the bag over her face as well. But she changed her mind and removed the plastic bag from Bharath’s face. When he became unconscious, she rushed him to hospital,” said a police officer.

Padma was produced before the Alandur Court on Saturday and remanded in judicial custody.
