Woman found murdered near swimming pool at Marina

The body of a woman was found dumped behind the swimming pool on Marina Beach on Sunday. Police said the woman, who was in her forties, was a sex worker.

On Sunday morning, walkers spotted the body. It was found near a garbage can. They alerted the police, who examined the body and noticed injury marks on the neck.

During investigation, the woman was identified as Kalaichelvi. “She was a sex worker and was last seen on the beach around 11 p.m.,” said a police officer investigating the case.

Police suspect that the accused walked with her to the spot behind the swimming pool. “There must have been an argument and she might have been murdered. There are strangulation marks and injuries on her neck,” the police officer said.

Three special teams have been formed to investigate the murder. “We have zeroed in on a few persons and are interrogating them,” said a senior police officer.

Shopkeepers on the Marina service road and walkers complained that there had been an increase in anti-social activities on the beach. Often, rowdies followed sex workers to the beach and it caused a lot of inconvenience to regular visitors, they said.

Insufficient lighting

“Over the past six months, crimes have increased. After 6 p.m., sex workers loiter on the beach sands. After dusk, the regular visitors leave the beach and many anti-social activities take place in the deserted parts of the beach,” said a shop keeper.

“One of the problems is that the lighting is insufficient. The high-mast lights do not work properly. The police should increase patrolling and ensure that the beach is safe for visitors,” said K. Raju, a walker.
