A newly-married woman allegedly committed suicide by hanging in her husband’s home in Kolathur.

The woman’s parents claimed she was driven to take the extreme step as her husband and his parents had harassed her for dowry. A revenue divisional officer’s inquiry is underway into the death.

Puzhal police said the deceased woman was Usha (27) of Kodungaiyur. She had married Murugan (32), a resident of VOC Street, New Lakshmipuram in Kolathur, on March 13.

Usha’s parents had promised to give four sovereigns of gold jewellery to the bridegroom as part of her dowry. But they were able to give only two sovereigns.

Murugan and his parents are suspected to have tormented Usha about her parents’ failure to give them the promised gold.

Puzhal police sent to the Government Kilpauk Hospital for a post-mortem examination and later handed it over to Usha’s parents. Following a complaint lodged by Usha’s father on Monday morning, Puzhal police handed over further investigations to the Ambattur RDO,
