Chennai woman arrested for murdering her children

A special team of the city police nabbed a 25-year-old woman who allegedly killed her two children, aged 4 and 7, by poisoning them at Moondramkattalai, near Kundrathur, on Saturday.

The police said Abirami’s husband Vijay, who works in a private bank, returned home on Saturday morning only to find their son and daughter dead. He immediately informed the Kundrathur police.

The police sent the bodies to the Government General Hospital at Chromepet for post-mortem examination.

Preliminary investigation revealed that Abirami had an extramarital affair with Sundaram, whom she met at a restaurant.

“The plan was to poison Vijay and the two children. Since Vijay did not return home at the usual time, he escaped.”

“After poisoning the children, the woman tried to suffocate them to death by closing their mouth and nose,” said a police officer.

Fled to Nagercoil

She saw the kids and her husband as a hindrance to her marriage with Sundaram, said a police officer from the Kundrathur police station.

After committing the crime, Abirami left for Nagercoil, from where she and Sundaram planned to go to Kerala. But Sundaram was arrested by the police in Chennai.

“After reaching Nagercoil, Abirami disposed of her SIM card,” said a police officer.

She called Sundaram from a traffic policeman’s mobile phone unaware that he had been arrested.

The Kundrathur police called the traffic policeman’s number to confirm that she was in Nagercoil.

“They made Sundaram call her and convince her to return to Chennai. When she reached the Koyambedu bus terminus, the police nabbed her,” said a police officer.

The two have been remanded in judicial custody.
