Even before a month could elapse, the newly-laid footpath on Fourth Avenue Main Road in Ashok Nagar is extremely busy. You guessed right. It bustles with not so much pedestrian movement as with commerce.
Vendors have set up shop and customers flock to them. The footpath near the intersection of Fourth Avenue Main Road and Jawaharlal Nehru Main Road, can be seen strewn with refuse from tender coconuts.
“The footpath is located the Metro Rail station at Ashok Nagar. There are stopovers for Metropolitan Transport Corporation on Fourth Avenue Main Road in Ashok Nagar. Therefore, pedestrians frequent the stretch. Despite the footpath having been widened, we walk in the carriageway,” says S. Akash, a resident of Ashok Nagar.
With customers of the vendors and petty shops parking their vehicles on the road, this section contributes to the overall traffic congestion in the region during rush hour. Some motorists drive on the wrong side adding to the chaos.
A Corporation official has promised that steps will be taken to have the footpath restored to pedestrians.
