Sabari Green Foundation, an NGO engaged in protection of water-bodies and greening initiatives, has appealed to the Water Resources Department, which is an arm of the Public Works Department, to construct a weir on Madipakkam Lake. The NGO has also made an appeal to officials of Zone 14 of Greater Chennai Corporation to lay a walkers’ pathway on Lake View Main Road Extension. At present, a walkers' path lined with benches exists up to the intersection of Erikarai Second Street, Lake View Main Road and Lake View Main Road Extension. A weir would raise the level of water upstream or regulate its flow, which in turn will increase the ground water level and lake belt storage.V. Subramani, founder-secretary, Sabari Green Foundation, said, “ The Pallikaranai Marsh should receive rainwater from Madipakkam lake. But, the rainwater from the lake is discharged through water channels near Kamakshi Hospital, at Sholinganallur, on East Coast Road, and at Okkiyam Maduvu, into Bay of Bengal, which is against the natural course. Rainwater should go to the Pallikaranai Marsh through Keezhkattalai. A weir has to be constructed on the lake in the Keezhkattalai area to harvest rainwater thus increasing the ground level..”

WRD officials promised to look into the appeal, and do the needful.
