The Chennai Corporation will start web-based monitoring of streetlights across the city. The civic body will also hire additional labourers to rectify faults in streetlights.
“At least 969 labourers will be hired on contract. The city has just 632 workers, which is inadequate. The Teynampet zone requires the largest number of labourers,” said an official.
In the proposed system, LED streetlights will be connected to 7,094 feeder pillar boxes for web-based monitoring. The 150W LED streetlight fittings could also be dimmed up to 30%, depending on the density of traffic and ambient light.
“In the first phase, it is proposed to provide a group monitoring and dimming system for 150W LED streetlights on bus routes,” said an official.
The civic body maintains 2.77 lakh streetlights along 471 bus routes and 33,000 roads. As many as 1.82 lakh streetlights have been converted to LED lights. This includes 1.1 lakh new LED streetlights provided in newly-added areas.
Drop in power bill
“After the use of energy-eff-cient LED streetlights, the total monthly power consumption charge has reduced from ₹6 crore to ₹4.5 crore,” said an official.
The web-based monitoring system will be done by a separate vendor through open tender. The system will enable web-based monitoring, including tracking real time status, occurrence of faults, record of performance parameters and remote operation of streetlights.
