Warning issued on Chinese firecrackers

Issuing a strict warning against the illegal import of Chinese firecrackers, the Customs Department has said that Chinese firecrackers contain several banned chemicals.

“The use of Chinese crackers are against the Explosives Rules, 2008, and are harmful, as they contain banned chemicals like red lead, copper oxide, lithium, etc. The chemicals are also highly dangerous and inimical to the environment. Buying Chinese crackers also affects the economy, and poses a threat to the domestic industry,” the Principal Commissioner of Customs (preventive), Chennai, stated. The import of firecrackers is “restricted” and as such, any person who is in possession of or carrying, depositing, concealing, selling or purchasing Chinese firecrackers will be punished under the Customs Act, 1962, he said.

If the general public comes across any sale or storage of Chinese crackers, they can inform the Chennai Customs Control Room at 044-25246800.
