Walls in Thiruveedhi Amman Koil Street turn message boards

Residents of Thiruveedhi Amman Koil Street in Mandaveli are street fighters of a different kind. They have successfully fought against encroachments and unauthorised parking of vehicles in their street, initiated a zero-waste system in all the households and freed the street of trash bins.

Their unity in championing environmental causes is quite enviable. This time, the members of the Thiruveedhi Amman Koil Street Residents Association (TAKSRA) have come together to paint the compound walls on the street in uniform colours.

M.K. Ramkumar, secretary of TAKSRA, says the association decided to keep the wall in uniform colour to symbolise the unity within the community. “We started with the long stretch of the compound wall of the R.A. Puram Corporation School. The association took the help of the NGO Karam Korpom-SAPS (Stop Abusing Public Spaces) to paint the walls with slogans and artwork,” he says.

The residents chose light yellow for the walls and deep brown for the columns.

“We wanted to spread positivity within the community and inspire those who pass by our street to keep the surroundings green and clean. We have painted inspirational messages and pictures on the wall,” says Ramkumar. One side of the stretch measuring about 750 feet has already been painted and the Association hopes to finish the rest of the stretch in two weeks.
