Vice-President presents Mahaveer Awards

Terrorism has become a threat to humanity and needs to be rooted out, Vice-President M. Venkaiah Naidu said on Sunday.

He was speaking at the 21st edition of the Mahaveer Awards for Excellence in Human Endeavour, organised by the Bhagwan Mahaveer Foundation. He presented the Mahaveer Award to Shiranee Pereira of People for Animals from Chennai (for the category of non-violence and vegetarianism), Bhagwan Mahavir Jain Relief Foundation Trust, Hyderabad (for the category of medicine) and Rural Health Organisation, Imphal (for the category of community and social service).

Governor Banwarilal Purohit said the Mahaveer Awards were meant to honour citizens and institutions who through their services had brought about change in the actions of society towards the weak, the destitute and those suffering. A brochure was also released.
