The American woman, who was stranded near Kancheepuram, was sent back to her country with assisstance from the U.S. Consulate as she expressed her wish to live with her parents, said city police.

The Kancheepuram Taluk police rescued the woman who was wandering along the Chennai-Bengaluru National Highway at Vellaigate, late on Wednesday.

She told them her name was Vella and that she was an United States national who had been living for a few months in Velachery with her husband, Vimal, a software engineer by profession.

The police, however, said the couple was living together in an apartment in Velachery and Vimal was unemployed. She went into depression and they had frequent quarrels. On Wednesday night, they left home along with another friend in a car. As he was not able to handle her, he abandoned her on the highway and left, they said.

An officer said that she had initially approached the Velachery police to trace her companion, but did not prefer a complaint.
