A two-year-old boy from Hubli, who had come to Chennai to see off his grandfather headed for Haj pilgrimage, died after falling from the Haj Committee building in Choolai on Thursday afternoon.

According to the police, Abdullah, 2, is the second son of Mosim, who runs a beef stall in Hubli, and Rukshar. The family had come to Chennai two days ago to send off Abdullah’s grandfather Badhsah on a pilgrimage to Mecca and Madina.

“There are 100 rooms in the committee building and the family was staying on the third floor,” said a police inspector attached to the Basin Bridge police station. They were supposed to return to their home town on Friday after Badhsah left.

“Badhsah left for the airport around 11 a.m. The family had left the luggage in the corridor of the 3rd floor. Abdullah was standing on top of a suitcase and looking down when he slipped and fell,” said an officer.

Passersby and those in the building rushed the boy to the Institute of Child Health in Egmore.

The boy reportedly sustained head injury and died later in the evening.

A post-mortem was conducted and the body was handed over to the family on Friday.
