Two killed as speeding motorcycle hits pillar

Police believe the duo was racing with another two young men on a motorcycle

Two young men died when the motorcycle which they were riding crashed into a pillar on Grand Southern Trunk Road in St. Thomas Mount early on Sunday.

The victims were reportedly racing with another duo on a motorcycle, according to investigating traffic policemen.

St. Thomas Mount traffic police (investigation) said Satish Kumar alias Aathesh (23) was riding his motorcycle – a Bajaj Pulsar — with Arun (17) seated pillion.

Residents of Choolai Pallam, MGR Nagar, the duo had completed their job at a marriage hall in Chromepet and were returning home.

Sathish was riding at a high speed while negotiating the sharp curve on GST Road near Asarkhana bus stop.

“Satish lost balance and the motorcycle crashed into the Metro Rail pillar, killing him on impact.

He was not wearing a helmet.

The pillion rider Arun also suffered severe head injuries in the accident and was rushed to a hospital but died on the way,” police said.

Investigators suspect the accident could be a case of road racing as some motorists on GST Road recalled Satish riding abreast with another young motorcyclist, also with a pillion rider.

However, the second motorcyclist had got past him and Satish was speeding to keep pace with him.

“Satish is a B. Com graduate and was always crazy about motorcycles and speed. The black motorcycle involved in the accident was his and he was returning from his part-time job of stage decoration for a wedding reception in Chromepet along with Arun,” Satish’s friend Madhu told The Hindu .

Traffic police are further probing the accident as motorists have complained that sand and gravel on the damaged road had resulted in the skidding of the motorcycle that caused the death of the youth and his teenaged friend, a plus-two student. Their bodies were sent to Government Royapettah Hospital for post-mortem and handed over to their relatives in the afternoon.
