January 27, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:33 am IST - CHENNAI:

Two persons were arrested after they threatened police personnel with a sickle during a traffic jam on Poonamallee High Road on Saturday.

A senior official of the Chennai City Police said the accused Tirupathy (33) and Bharat (26) were history sheeters, who have been named in other cases. They were returning on a two-wheeler from Ramapuram, after having attacked a person with a sickle.

The suspects, who were drunk, found the road blocked for a government function and picked up a quarrel with motorists stranded at the point. Police personnel, who were providing security to the Ministers attending the function, went to pacify the crowd.

On seeing the policemen, Tirupathy drew out a sickle and threatened to attack them. But on finding that they were outnumbered, he dropped the weapon and they tried to escape. The police caught them and detained them.

The Poonamallee Police have filed a case of attempt to murder.
