Turtles seized

Two persons were detained for attempting to smuggle 4,800 live Red Eared Slider turtles, that are banned, at Chennai airport, according to a release. Kader Batcha Abdul Vahab and Mujibur Rahman from Ilayangudi who came from Bangkok via Guangzhou in China, were detained.

Officials found that both had concealed 2,400 turtles in cartons. The Wildlife Crime Control Bureau identified them as Red Eared Slider, an exotic species of foreign origin, the release said.

These species are banned as they are considered ‘invasive’ with a negative impact on the ecosystem, it added. The turtles were subsequently sent back to the country of origin. A fine of ₹1 lakh has been imposed.
