Transgender cop attempts suicide

Points finger at three colleagues in a video clip

December 05, 2018 12:47 am | Updated 12:47 am IST - Ramanathapuram

R. Nasriya, a 23-year-old transperson who joined the police force in Ramanathapuram in August, attempted suicide on Monday night over alleged harassment at her workplace. She is currently undergoing treatment in hospital.

After overcoming several hurdles, Nasriya donned the khaki uniform and was posted in the Armed Reserve wing on August 7. She is the first member of the third gender to join the Police Department in Ramanathapuram.

Before her suicide attempt, she had recorded a video message, accusing certain colleagues of harassment.

In hospital, Nasriya said she hoped things would change for the better at her workplace.

Earlier, based on her complaint, Ramanathapuram Superintendent of Police Omprakash Meena had ordered an inquiry by District Crime Branch DSP Ravindra Prakash, who did not find prima facie material to take the case further.

Second inquiry

Following the suicide attempt, the SP ordered a fresh inquiry by Ramanathapuram DSP Natarajan. Based on his report, necessary action would be initiated, he said.

Mr. Omprakash said Nasriya was posted in the Armed Reserve wing and given only office work. She failed to report for duty from November 2, and absented herself without prior intimation.
