If the number of functional signals in a city determines the traffic flow and travel time then we have a lot to improve. Here’s one more junction where the traffic signal needs better care and maintenance.

Non-functional traffic signals at MRC Nagar not only makes commuting and crossing a challenge, but also dangerous. In particular, we are talking about Dr. D. G. S. Dhinakaran Salai, Mayor Ramanathan Chettiar (MRC) Nagar Main Road and Karpagam Avenue in Raja Annamalaipuram junction. At present, only amber light blinks at the intersection.

For the pedestrians, it is difficult to cross the intersection due to continuous flow of traffic and undisciplined motorists who do not bother to halt or slow down at the intersection. They cut through the free flow of traffic towards MRC Nagar Main Road from Karpagam Avenue and Greenways Road.

It is a common sight to see motorists from Karpagam Avenue take a free left and right turn towards Santhome and Adyar.

The neighbourhood also has Metropolitan Transport Corporation buses, water tankers and other private vehicles that use this stretch. It’s also in close proximity to educational institutions, which has many vehicles ferrying children.

However, due to the non-functioning signals, the traffic remains chaotic here.

Given the number of pedestrians and vehicles frequenting this road, steps should be taken to repair the signals, motorists said.
