‘Remove the defunct traffic signal’

This facility near the Theosophical Society has long ceased to serve its purpose

A traffic signal linked to a U-turn under the flyover on Durgabai Deshmukh Road opposite Fortis Heart Failure Centre, Adyar, was meant to help motorists and pedestrians. Defunct, it no longer serves its purpose. In fact, even in the best of times, it hardly did. Located around 100 metres from Thiru-Vi-Kaa bridge, the signal is meant to help pedestrians as well as motorists on the side of the road where Theosophical Society is located to cross the stretch below the flyover.

As this section of the road is too narrow and has a warren of shops, a signal was placed a few years ago to ensure the safety of pedestrians. However, the purpose of installing the signal was defeated as motorists constantly jumped the signal, hindering the movement of pedestrians.

A few months ago, speed-breakers were laid before the defunct signal to prevent speeding by motorists. “Removal of the signal will ensure there is more space for pedestrians, as the existing footpath could be extended. As there is no scope for firther widening, the existing space should be optimally utilised. Further, the existing speed-breakers must be painted. The reflectors too,” says S. Venketash, a resident of Adyar. Additionally, better illumination of the stretch will also help prevent accidents. At present, accidents occur near the signal, especially during night. “Efforts will be taken to shift the traffic signal and to paint the speed-breakers,” said a Corporation official.
