Members of the Tamilnadu Vanigar Sangankalin Peramaippu have threatened to gherao the State Assembly on January 8, demanding that the government to exempt small and micro traders from the plastic ban till alternatives are found for packaging.

A.M. Vikramaraja, president of the Peramaippu, told the media on Friday that more than 25,000 traders from across the State will participate in the protest march towards the Assembly. He said following the protest march, the traders will intensify their protests against the plastic ban by shutting shops for three days after Pongal.

Members highlighted the hardships faced by small traders at the hands of government officials who, in the name of inspections, ‘blindly’ seized all plastic goods in shops.

Mr. Vikramaraja said the small traders had requested the government to put off the ban on single-use plastics until alternatives were found for the packaging materials used by small and micro traders.
