Most of the shops on municipal lands in Tambaram on Thursday shut down in protest against a manifold increase in rent. Shopkeepers alleged that the municipal officials unilaterally revised the floor rent for shops.

Tamil Nadu Vanigar Sanga Peramaippu president A.M. Vikramaraja and a few office-bearers of traders association met Municipal Commissioner K. Krishnamurthy. According to them, all the shop owners in the market and other buildings rented out by the municipality were paying a monthly rent of ₹3,500. “Now it has been revised as ₹46,300. We simply cannot bear such a huge increase in rent,” said Mr. Vikramaraja.
