Workers are busy creating a small enclosure at chisel at wooden blocks, while their colleagues fix tiles on the walls to create a small enclosure inside Chennai Mofussil Bus Terminus, in Koyambedu, for breastfeeding mothers. In a week’s time, women with children can breastfeed their children in air-conditioned comfort, without any disturbance from strangers.

Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority is creating the two enclosures for the women as part of an announcement to mark breastfeeding week. The State government had announced the creation of separate rooms for the same in bus terminals across Tamil Nadu.

Officials say there will be two cabins in the space between the concourse and the bus platforms. Each cabin will be around 250 square feet and fitted with individual air-conditioners. The cabins can be used by 15 women at a time and ensures total privacy for them, they say. There will also be a provision for women to change their children’s diapers and clothes.

The new facility will be a boon to women like S. Manoharan’s daughter-in-law. “She travels to her parents’ home near Tiruvannamalai. It is very difficult for women like her. She has to search for empty buses to feed her daughter,” says Mr. Manoharan, a retired employee of Metropolitan Transport Corporation.

Close to three lakh people travel in buses from Koyambedu and a good number of them are woman, accompanied by their children, according to a source in State Express Transport Corporation. MTC officials say all branch managers have been instructed to start work on the breastfeeding centres for lactating mothers. "We received the letter from the headquarters only recently. Work will be started soon," an official adds.
