A renovated toilet and a new drinking water supply system were inaugurated at the Government Boys Higher Secondary School, Chromepet on Monday.
Rotary Club of Madras East took up the projects, based on a news report in The Hindu in August about the terrible condition of the toilets. There are 2,016 students at the school, including 54 girls in vocational groups in higher secondary sections.
The main toilet complex, located at the north-western corner of the school’s sprawling premises was in very poor shape and the water supply lines were damaged.
The walls have now been fitted with ceramic tiles and a new cement floor has also been built.
Closets have been replaced and taps installed, with water supply lines and a new overhead tank. The septic tank inside the school has been linked with Pallavaram Municipality’s underground drainage network. Further, a borewell has been sunk to supply drinking water to students.
Around Rs. 6 lakh was spent for the work, said S. Sudhir, director (community service) of the club. S. Sekar, headmaster of the school, said former students too, contributed to the maintenance of certain amenities at the school.
