Three software engineers drowned in the sea near the New Beach at Thiruvanmiyur on Sunday afternoon while attempting to retrieve a volleyball with which they were playing. They were part of a 10-member group that had gone to the beach.
Thiruvanmiyur police said the victims, D.Sakthi (21), G.Praveen (21) and N.Ananthabhushan (21), of Karnataka, were working with an IT firm in Perungudi. They were residing in Sai Nagar, Thoraipakkam.
On Sunday afternoon, the group had come to the New Beach and started playing volleyball on the sands when the ball fell in the sea.
“One after other, the three men tried to get the ball from the sea which was very rough on Sunday. They were sucked into the waves and struggled to get ashore. Sakthi was rescued by some fishermen, but he was unconscious,” a police officer said. Sakthi was rushed to a private hospital in Adyar where he was pronounced dead by doctors, he added.
An hour later, Praveen's body was washed ashore some 200 metres away from the New Beach, while Ananthabhushan's body was spotted on a shore in Pallavakkam on Monday morning, police sources said. The bodies were sent to the Government Royapettah Hospital for post-mortem.
