May 17 Movement coordinator Thirumurugan Gandhi was remanded in yet another case, booked against him in 2017, with the addition of a sedition charge.

On Friday, a metropolitan magistrate had declined to remand him in a case booked by the Cyber Crime Cell. However, Mr. Gandhi was picked up by the Royapettah police within a few minutes of being set free.

The police did not give any immediate answer to his questions about why he was being arrested.

Late into the night, he was informed that he was arrested in connection with a case booked by the Royapettah police, after he and 150 others took out a procession to garland a Periyar statue on September 20, 2017.

The police added two Sections, 124-A(Sedition) and 153 (Wantonly giving provocation with intent to cause riot), of the IPC, in the FIR on Friday night. At 11.45 p.m., he was taken to the residence of XVII magistrate Angalaswari and was lodged in Central prison, Puzhal.

“The authorities have shifted him from Central prison, Puzhal, to Vellore without informing any of his family members or us,” said another May 17 Movement coordinator Praveen.
