The Tata Group recognised the city level winners from the South Zone (Tamil Nadu, Pondicherry and Kerala) of the sixth annual ‘Tata Building India School Essay Competition — 2011-12’, in Chennai on July 25. The winners were selected from a competitive pool of students through 20 city level competitions conducted in seven cities for English and 13 cities for Tamil.
The English edition of the essay competition saw 275 schools participating while 420 schools participated in the Tamil edition, attracting a total of over 3.7 lakh students.
The awards ceremony was held at Russian Centre of Science and Culture in Chennai and the chief guest at the event, Avvai Natarajan, Tamil scholar and former Vice-Chancellor of Thanjavur Tamil University, awarded trophies, gifts and certificates to the winners.
The winning essays at the city level will be further judged by a prominent jury for national level recognition.
The theme for the 2011-12 edition of the essay competition was ‘How can you make the world you live in — your home, your city, your nation — a cleaner and greener place’. The essays received from the enthusiastic participants featured thought provoking and inspiring ideas which clearly showcased the vision, compassion and conviction of today’s young Indians.
