The Tamil Nadu Fireworks and Amorces Manufacturers Association (Tanfama) has requested government agencies to immediately eliminate Chinese contraband fireworks that have entered the country over the last few months.
A statement issued by A. Asaithambi, president of Tanfama, said that three items in particular — ‘pop-pop’ (throw down bomb) which bursts when thrown down or when stepped on, ‘cold pyro’ (anars) which are stage fireworks used in weddings and shows and confetti (paper shooters) are swarming the markets.

He said these products contain chemicals and compositions prohibited in India.
“They are dangerous and lethal, resulting in disastrous accidents and large-scale environmental deterioration,” he added.
Sold by e-commerce firms
According to Tanfama, details regarding the Chinese fireworks are put up on social media with video clippings.
They are also sold online by e-commerce firms, including Amazon and Flipkart.
The Tanfama statement pointed out that while rules prohibit transportation of fireworks by bus, train or flight where there are passengers, it seems like these three contraband are booked online, airlifted and delivered through couriers.
The association has asked the government and the departments concerned to look into the issue.
