Tamil Maanila Congress leader G.K. Vasan on Sunday urged the State government to take steps to collect solid waste to produce fertiliser or biogas and generate electricity from them.
In his statement, he appreciated the work of the Greater Chennai Corporation in composting solid waste to make fertiliser.
Mr. Vasan then urged the State government to initiate similar methods in villages and towns across Tamil Nadu.
“If the kitchen waste and other solid waste is cleared on a daily basis, be it summer or rainy season, it would go a long way in maintaining public health and hygiene. It is essential to remove garbage regularly and to dispose them of appropriately,” the former Union Minister said.
Continuous steps to convert solid waste into biogas or electricity or fertiliser through scientific methods and creating awareness among commercial establishments and the general public over this issue would help in waste segregation, Mr. Vasan added.
