A four-day Swedish film festival, jointly organised by the Embassy of Sweden and Indo-cine Appreciation Foundation, was inaugurated at Chennai on Monday evening.
A total of seven Swedish films will be screened at Russian Cultural Centre from February 24 to 27 at 6 p.m. Films of directors including Hannes Holm, Martin Hogdahl, Jan Troell and Maud Nycander will be showcased.
Speaking at the inaugural function, Harald Sandberg, Swedish Ambassador to India, said such a film festival was being organised in Chennai after a gap of seven years.
“The city has a reputation of being serious about its love for cinema. In the future, such festivals will be held at shorter intervals,” he said.
He said not even 10 million people speak Swedish in the world. “Language has also played its part in more or less confining Swedish films to the art house scene in the past. But the new Swedish films have critics and fans across the world,” he added.
Speaking about the films to be showcased in the festival he said it would be a mixed bag including documentaries, docudramas, feature films and children’s films.
Mr. Arun Vasu, consul, Consulate of Sweden, Chennai also spoke and outlined the historical connection between Tamil Nadu and Sweden.
