This summer, if the residents in the southern suburbs have not been facing many power cuts or severe voltage fluctuations, it is because of the improvement works undertaken on the distribution side by Tangedco.

In addition to installing transformers of various capacities in the existing substations, Tangedco has also planned to construct new ones in the southern suburbs that have been identified as problematic areas.

V. Rama Rao, a social activist of Lakshmi Nagar in Nanganallur, is quite happy that his area has not faced any power cuts or low voltage unlike last year.

A middle-level official of Tangedco said the power demand in Nanganallur has been increasing year after year and so it was proposed to increase the capacity of the transformers in the substation located at Hindu Colony to prevent voltage fluctuations. Two new feeders of 11-kilo volt (KV) and a new power transformer of 8 MVA have been installed in the substation. In Thillai Ganga Nagar substation, one 8 MVA transformer has been installed with another 8 MVA transformer shortly to be installed, he added.

A senior official of Tangedco said the commissioning of a new 230 KV substation in Guindy Industrial Estate has helped tide over electricity problems in the southern parts of the city. He said an additional 400 KV substation has also been proposed to be installed in the industrial estate in the coming years.

Similarly, three new sub-stations in the southern suburbs comprising Mudichur, Chitlapakkam and Shriram IT Gateway at Perungalathur have been planned. All the substations are of 33/11 KV type.

In addition to installing transformers in existing substations, Tangedco also plans to construct new ones
