Students want bus passes

Students Federation of India led a protest on Monday demanding that college managements issue bus passes.

The Higher Education Department issued a circular that students could travel by the State transport buses by displaying their college identity cards. SFI South Chennai District secretary D. Chandru, who led the protest, said, “The Higher Education Minister said the students in school uniform could travel for free. But the same does not apply to college students. Though the government had held talks with the Transport Minister, the transport employees tell us to get down as we are only riding for free. We have spoken from our organisation to Higher Education Minister K.P. Anbalagan.”

Some students end up spending as much as ₹60 a day on travel. It becomes a burden that students want to give up their studies,” Mr. Chandru said.
