Train services were affected at the Tambaram railway station during the morning rush hour on Friday due to a signal failure. As a result, four electric trains to Chennai Beach were cancelled. Southern Railway sources in Tambaram told reporters that a signal failure occurred on platforms 1 and 2 a little past 8 a.m. It was not until 9 a.m. that the problem was set right.

Huge crowds swelled in Tambaram and other suburban railway stations along the route. As a result, college students and office-goers were affected. However, the worst affected lot were students of Class X of CBSE schools who had an examination on Friday.

As they were unable to board the electric trains they rushed to the bus terminus in Tambaram and some of them even hired autorickshaws to reach their examination venues on time. Many of the students were on their way to the examination centres as far as Meenambakkam.
