Pachaiyappa’s College remained shut on Monday as students joined the teachers’ protest on the campus. As many as 500 students of the college, under the aegis of Students Federation of India and Revolutionary Students’ Youth Federation, joined the protest.

The Joint Action Committee, formed by teachers affiliated to the Association of University Teachers of the six colleges under the Pachiayappa’s Trust Board, launched a three-day relay fast on Saturday demanding the removal of the trust members. JAC secretary N. Shettu said they were protesting against irregularities and anti-teacher activities by the trust members.

Teachers intensified their protests after the head of the mathematics department of Cuddalore-based C. Kandaswami Naidu College for Women, was transferred for seeking removal of the college principal, against whom corruption charges had been levelled by the Directorate of Collegiate Education and Tiruvalluvar University.

“The accounts were last tabled in 2004. The promised civil works have not been taken up and trust members have not visited the college for 45 days,” Dr. Shettu said.
