Manual scavenging must end, says Stalin

‘Shameful that T.N. leads in number of manual scavenging deaths’

Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam president M.K. Stalin called for steps to put an end to manual scavenging, a day after a 26-year-old youth asphyxiated while unclogging a sewage channel at the Express Avenue mall.

“Since 1993, 206 persons have lost their lives while cleaning sewers and septic tanks. It is shameful that Tamil Nadu leads in the number of manual scavenging deaths. This includes the DMK regime as well. Not only the government, everyone should come together and put an end to this practice,” Mr. Stalin tweeted on Wednesday.

The DMK president said it was the Dravidian movement’s stand that men should not be engaged for this task.

“New technological devices should be developed,” he said.
