The city, awaiting a delayed Northeast monsoon to rescue it from impending water shortage, woke up to an overcast sky and light rains in some parts on Tuesday.
Rains may return over coastal areas as the monsoon is around the corner.
Places including Chennai had light showers early morning.
According to Meteorological department, conditions are turning favourable for monsoon to arrive over Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, Kerala and adjoining areas of Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka around November 1.
Besides a cyclonic circulation over southwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining Sri Lanka, another weather system that is expected to intensify into low pressure area by Wednesday prevails over west central Bay of Bengal.
A trough linking these two systems would usher in monsoon rains.

Chennai may continue to enjoy overcast skies and experience light rains for one more day and rains may become more widespread by Thursday.
IMD has warned fishermen not to venture into sea as strong northeasterly winds may prevail gusting up to 50 km per hour over north Tamil Nadu and Puducherry coasts.
