An attempt was made to damage the offices of Srilankan Airlines on Kodambakkam High Road early on Wednesday.

The glass frontage of the four-storey building bore the brunt of the attack. The attack itself was not realised until several hours later.

The police said three men on motorcycles were spotted near the building around 1 a.m. on Wednesday. They pelted stones at the building and fled before the watchman posted in the complex could react. Glass panes on the first and second floors of the building were found damaged.

Recent media reports relating to the death of LTTE supremo Velupillai Prabhakaran’s son Balachandran are believed to have triggered the attack, a police officer said.

After Wednesday’s attack, security was beefed up at the complex, at the Deputy High Commission of Sri Lanka on Sterling Road and at the Maha Bodhi Centre on Kenneth Lane in Egmore.
