Pedestrians acutely feel the absence of speed breakers near the intersection of Grand Southern Trunk (GST) Road and Vandalur-Kelambakkam Road.

There is a zebra-crossing at this point, which has been rendered useless by motorists who would not slow down, let alone stop, for pedestrians.

Out of frustration, those who regularly cross this intersection, walking, have at different times asked the police to address the issue.

But it is the State Highways Department that has to lay speed-breakers near this intersection.

If installed soon, the speed breakers would help pedestrians deal with a prevailing situation — due to the ongoing work for the construction of a flyover at the intersection, traffic signals have been removed.

“As the intersection is busy round-the-clock, children and senior citizens find it difficult to cross it.

“Rash driving by a few motorists forces pedestrians to wait for more than five minutes at the intersection.

“To enable pedestrains to cross the stretch without any difficulty, speed breakers must be painted in bright colours, with reflectors. Warning signboards should be installed on both the sides of the roads to alert motorists about approaching speed-breakers,” said S. Chandra, a senior citizen.

When contacted, the Kancheepuram district police officials said the stretch comes under the jurisdiction of the State Highways Department. Repeated calls to the authorities of the State Highways Department did not evoke any response.
