more-in

A man claiming to be a ‘soothsayer’ escaped with a gold chain weighing four sovereigns from a house in Radha Nagar, Chromepet. The police said Parthasarathi, 38, a bachelor-cook, was approached by an 80-year-old man, who claimed to be a ‘soothsayer’.

The old man told Mr. Parthasarathi that a pooja had to be performed at his house. The pooja was performed on Wednesday and as part of the ritual, the ‘soothsayer’ asked Mr. Parthasarathi to part with his gold chain.

The chain was then hung around a picture of god and when Mr. Parthasarathi went inside the house to fetch water, the old man quietly slipped away with the chain. Mr. Parthasarathi then realised that he had been duped.

The Chitlapakkam police registered a case and conducted preliminary enquiries. The old man was identified using CCTV footage and the police are looking for him, an official said.
