The silver jubilee celebrations of the VGP Ulaga Tamil Sangam was inaugurated at the Dr. MGR-Janaki College of Arts and Science for Women on Saturday.

Inaugurating the event, K. Pandiarajan, Minister for Tamil Official Language and Culture, said the government was taking steps to preserve and strengthen the language. “The language has grown by leaps and bounds over the years. Organisations like this have been played an integral part,” he said.

Reflecting on the recent global convention organised by UNESCO to launch the International Year of Indigenous Languages, Mr. Pandiarajan spoke about how Tamil as a language and the culture associated with it had continued to grow.

Kuralosai Thirukkural by V.G. Santhosham, the founder and president of the sangam, was released. As part of the day-long celebrations, discussions and programmes involving Tamil scholars and academicians were organised and a photo exhibition was inaugurated on the college campus.
