Series of workshops to address violence against women

A series of workshops are being conducted to provide guidance on how to deal with cases of Violence Against Women (VAW).

Organised by the British Deputy High Commission, Chennai in association with Chennai-based NGO International Foundation for Crime Prevention and Victim Care (PCVC) and Lawyer’s Collective, New Delhi, the workshops are delivered in partnership with the Tamil Nadu State Judicial Academy, Legal Services Authority and Police Academy.

The workshops, taking place from November 18-23, aim to bridge the gap between police personnel, the judiciary, lawyers and victims of cases of VAW.

To police officials

They focus on communicating to 170 police officials, lawyers and judicial officers the dynamics of VAW.

“In spite of Tamil Nadu having the highest number of women police stations, only a few cases are registered under the acts meant to prevent violence against women,” said Letika Saran, IPS (retd), former Director General of Police Tamil Nadu.

Participants will be acquainted with four key laws — Domestic Violence Act, 2005, the POSCO Act, Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace Act, 2013 and the Criminal Law Act, 2013.
