Security has been beefed up across the city in view of Republic Day celebrations on Saturday.

Director General of Police T.K. Rajendran held discussions with police officials on Friday and issued instructions on elaborate bandobust arrangements across the State. In Chennai alone, over 15,000 police personnel will be deployed on bandobust duty. Three thousand personnel will stand guard at the venue of the parade — Kamarajar Salai — and surrounding areas.

Traffic will be barred on the stretch from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. Under the direct supervision of City Police Commissioner A.K. Viswanathan, Additional Commissioner of Police Mahesh Kumar Agarwal, Joint Commissioner of Police V. Balakrishnan and other officers will closely monitor security arrangements.

Vigil along coast

Indian Coast Guard and Coastal Security Group personnel will maintain vigil over movements along the coast.

“Additional forces will be deployed at places of public congregation such as places of worship, railway stations and bus stands. Armed police personnel have been deployed at the Central railway station, Egmore station and airport. Borders of the city will be sealed and vehicle-checks are being intensified,” said a senior police officer.
