The city police have made elaborate security arrangements at the M.A. Chidambaram stadium, Chepauk, where thousands of fans would converge to witness the Indian Premier League (IPL) cricket match between Chennai Super Kings and Royal Challengers Bangalore on Saturday.
Police deployed
A four-tier security ring will be put in place in and around the stadium with over 2,000 police personnel, including commando force and other special units maintaining vigil.
A senior police officer said, “The required strength of police personnel will be requisitioned and deployed in and around the stadium. All precautionary measures have been taken to extend the security.”
Last year, the IPL matches scheduled in Chennai were moved to Pune amid protests by pro-Tamil groups over the Cauvery river water sharing row.
According to sources, private security personnel and volunteers will be deployed in addition to the police personnel.
Anti-sabotage checks
Anti-sabotage checks were made at hotels where the players are staying.
Sleuths of the Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad carried out anti-sabotage checks at other vulnerable places. IPL organisers also issued instructions to be followed by fans at the stadium.
