Rights panel calls for report on missing boy

Taking suo motu cognisance of news reports in The Hindu on May 6 on the missing boy from Gummidipoondi Railway Station and the electrocution of a boy in Tiruvallur district, the State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) has called for reports from the authorities.

Referring to the report, ‘Missing boy suspected kidnapped,’ SHRC chairperson Justice T. Meenakumari called for a report from the Inspector General of Police, Railways, Chennai, on the steps taken to trace the child and the safety measures that are in place in the railway station to prevent such occurrence and whether children found abandoned are produced before the Child Welfare Committee.

The Commission also called for a report from Tiruvallur District Collector on whether the boy was rescued and handed over to his guardians. The matter has been listed before the Commission after four weeks.
